{"id":747,"date":"2015-03-16T12:25:38","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T17:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tim.mcguinn.es\/s\/?p=747"},"modified":"2015-07-26T20:28:40","modified_gmt":"2015-07-26T20:28:40","slug":"visiting-the-white-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tim.mcguinn.es\/s\/?p=747","title":{"rendered":"Visiting the White House"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_760\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tim.mcguinn.es\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015_0314_WashDCMonu_055011.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-760\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-760\" src=\"http:\/\/tim.mcguinn.es\/s\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/2015_0314_WashDCMonu_05501.jpg\" alt=\"Washington Monument\" width=\"289\" height=\"480\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doing the lean back on the Washington Monument tourist thing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The weather may have been very wet on Saturday, but we made it into Washington, DC, to\u00a0celebrate our daughter&#8217;s birthday by touring the White House. \u00a0The\u00a0president was in Los Angeles\u00a0for the weekend, but we didn&#8217;t let that damper our enthusiasm either.<\/p>\n<p>Overall the tour isn&#8217;t very long, and the tour confirmation note described the tour as being a self-guided, 45-minute tour, but it is what you make of it. \u00a0Our daughter managed to befriend one of the secret service people on the tour route who allowed us inside the East Room tour ropes and gave us a special up-close view of the George Washington&#8217;s official portrait &#8212; Did you know it\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2014\/07\/a-george-washington-portrait-with-a-typo\/375318\/\">misspells<\/a> &#8220;United States of America&#8221; on a book spine?<\/p>\n<p>Some more pictures are posted at <a title=\"Washington DC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/7thtee\/sets\/72157649052755614\/\">Flickr<\/a>, they show a timeline that starts with smiles, but soon fatigue sets in when we get to the National Mall.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest struggle of the tour, as we live in this social media world, is the need for restraint as phones and cameras are not allow.
